‘Thotti,’ a documentary on manual scavengers, was released at a function organised by Madurai Legal Awareness Coordination Committee here on Tuesday by R. Mahadevan, Judge, Madras High Court. The documentary deals with the social discrimination and hardships faced by manual scavengers.

Mr. Mahadevan, who also released a book on the occasion, wanted the people to have social responsibility and be sensitive social issues.

M. Britto, a social activist, said that technology should used to remove waste without human intervention.

After watching the movie, Zaheer Hussain from the audience said, “We the civilians are the real criminals in this problem and only when we start disposing waste properly these problems will come to an end.”

“In the last few months, we found 82 workers cleaning the faecal waste in Madurai and 154 workers in Virudhunagar and submitted the details with evidence to the respective civic bodies, which did not take any action. Virudhungar Municipality did not even accept the details,” A. Sahaya Philomin Raj, convener of Madurai Legal Awareness Coordination Committee, said.
