Doctor's Day is a significant day for the doctors to revitalise themselves and rededicate their services to the people and to set right things prioritising ethics, compassion, righteousness, modesty, nobility and honesty, said P.Namperumalsamy, President, Aravind Medical Research Foundation.

Delivering the chief guest's address on the occasion of Doctor's Day celebration held at Indian Medical Association Hall ground here on Sunday, he said that doctors should think on three aspects which include physician-patient relationship which should be patient-centred, physician-physician relationship which should be cordial and, lastly, better relationship when it comes to rendering community health care as societal responsibility is essentially important.

Earlier in the evening, veteran physicians and surgeons were honoured for their lifetime services to the community. Ninety-one-year-old former surgeon N.S.Shanmugam and other doctors like Sam C.Bose and K.S.Sreenivasan were honoured for their yeomen service. Forty seven doctors, including 8 women, working in remote areas around Madurai such as Melur, Sholavandan, Paramakudi, Batlagundu, Dindigul and Kariapatti were also honoured.

K.S. Mayilvaganan, president, IMA Madurai branch, in his speech remembered his teachers who made him a physician. He also spoke about the legendary physician Bidhan Chandra Roy, whose birth anniversary which falls on July 1 is celebrated as doctor's day.

Eighteen governing council members of the Madurai branch took pledge to donate their eyes during the function. The pledge documents were handed over to Dr. Namperumalsamy.
