The Society for Community Organisation (SOCO) Trust has condemned “foisting of cases” against “human rights defenders”.

In a statement, its deputy director S. Selva Gomathi condemned the arrest of those running organisations, which brought human rights violations to the notice of government officials and National/State Human Rights Commission, on false charges. It alleged that while self-styled human rights organisations that were involved in kangaroo courts and untouchability crimes were going about scot-free, those who fought against crime against women, child labour, custodial death, encounters and untouchability were targeted on false charges.

The SOCO Trust appealed to the National Human Rights Commission to intervene in the situation and the State government to give up its “anti-people” attitude and demanded the withdrawal of cases filed against human rights defenders, including K. Kandasamy of People’s Watch.
