Students should get jobs using their merit and efforts instead of depending on the placement cells in their colleges, said University Grants Commission Vice-Chairman H. Devaraj.

Speaking at ‘Harvest-2016’ here on Saturday, the fifth graduation day ceremony at Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, Mr. Devaraj said that he was against the concept of having placement cells in colleges.

“The students should realise the value of their course instead of focusing on just marks and be competent enough to get jobs on their own,” he said.

Mr. Devaraj also urged the students to make use of the various initiatives like Make in India, Skill India and Impacting Research Innovation and Technology (IMPRINT – INDIA) recently launched by the government.

He suggested that these schemes could be used by the students to give back to the society what they have learnt. “You should identify local problems and strive to provide solutions for them,” Mr. Devarai said.

M. Arumugam, Founder and Managing Director of Broadline Technologies Private Limited, who participated as a special guest, said that there was gap between the marks scored by the students and their skills.

“I interview a lot of engineering graduates for jobs. They have exceptional scores on their mark sheets.

However, in terms of presenting themselves and applying their academic knowledge in use, they do poorly,” he said.

He asked the students to focus on the fields of robotics and analytics, which, according to him, have considerable potential for growth in the coming years.

M.V. Muthuramalingam, Chairman of Velammal Educational Trust, asked the students to be useful not only to their family but also to the place they hail from.

He encouraged the students to become entrepreneurs.

A total of 593 undergraduate and postgraduate students were awarded degrees at the function.
