Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam women’s wing leader and Rajya Sabha MP K. Kanimozhi assured the people of Usilampatti of completing the long-pending demand of constructing 58-canal scheme, if voted to power, which was aimed at providing irrigation to 58 villages in Usilampatti taluk.

She made this promise while interacting with the local people after inspecting the aqueduct portion of the 27-km-long canal that would carry flood water from Vaigai dam to the villages.

“I could see no other reason, but for political motive that made the AIADMK Government to put the work on the backburner during the last five years,” Ms. Kanimozhi said. It was only because the DMK government had proposed the project way back in 1999.

The work remains incomplete midway.

“No funds had been utilised for completing the project during the last five years,” she said.

The villagers complained that they did not know who to represent their case for early completion under the AIADMK government. This was despite a series of protests they had held for the issue, she said.

“All along my visit in Usilampatti people, especially women, complained that they faced even drinking water problem,” she said.
