The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-Congress alliance will be defeated in the ensuing elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Communist Party of India national secretary D. Raja has said.
Describing the alliance as a “sinking ship,” Mr. Raja said that the people of Tamil Nadu will teach the combine a good lesson.
The Congress and the DMK had caused national loss to the tune of Rs.1.76 lakh crore through the 2G spectrum allocation scam. The common man was also angered by the killing of Sri Lankan Tamils and attacks on Indian fisherman by Sri Lankan Navy.
“The DMK and the Congress are morally and politically down and people will hand them a huge defeat,” he told reporters here on Friday. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) search on Kalaignar TV office premises in Chennai had projected the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leadership as an “accused” in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, he said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's reference to coalition politics in the context of scams was a reference only to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. “The Nationalist Congress Party and the Trinamool Congress have clarified that the reference was not to them.” He wondered how both the parties still continued to be in power together at the Centre and formed an alliance in Tamil Nadu. “If there was no loss in the 2G spectrum allocation, then why was (former Telecom Minister) A. Raja arrested?”
The S band scam that had happened in a department which was directly under the Prime Minister's Office revealed there was no transparency in governance, he alleged.
Condemning the attacks on Indian fishermen, Mr. Raja said that only a relook at the Katchatheevu agreement would resolve the issue.
The Prime Minister should directly intervene and warn the Sri Lankan government. The attacks on fishermen were in violation of international conventions — UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue — and Sri Lankan Government could be tried for this in the International Court of Justice.
