The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) staged demonstrations against the Tamil Nadu government in the city and suburbs for the long duration of power outage being experienced across the State.
The protests were held at 25 places, including Scott Road, Kalavasal Junction, Munichalai Road Junction, and Anna Bus Stand in the city. Speakers leading the protests said that even after assuming office 19 months back, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had failed to provide uninterrupted electricity supply in the State, as promised on coming to power. The bleak power situation had exposed the inefficiency of the government led by Jayalalithaa. The government should table a white paper on the power scenario, as demanded by DMK president M. Karunanidhi.
The AIADMK government had also failed in augmenting power generation. Eighteen hours of power cut a day had resulted in hardship for all, particularly industries, big and small, as production had dipped to an all-time low. When such was the reality, the AIADMK leaders were claiming that all was well. The people would teach a lesson to the party in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
Traffic was diverted for sometime in the forenoon near Madurai railway station and Scott Road in view of the agitation.
