DMK appeal on ‘women wards’

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionaries here opposed the State government’s plan to introduce women wards in the Corporation for the ensuing local body election in October.

After submitting a memorandum to Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri, a delegation of DMK functionaries led by urban secretary G. Thalapathi, former MLA Velusamy and former Mayor P. Kulandaivelu told reporters here on Thursday that the AIADMK was planning to convert the wards which their party won into women wards.

The State government had announced that 50 per cent of the seats would be earmarked for women, but the wards for the corporation had not been mentioned. “We want transparency in ward identification and the officials should convene an all-party meeting in this regard before taking any decision,” thy said
