Tragedy struck the family of Madurai district topper S. Parthasarathy (1,179 marks) whose father died of heart attack within two hours of the Plus Two results on Friday.
“My father was expecting good marks from me…but he is not here to know my marks. I scored good marks but lost my father,” the student who was weeping inconsolably at a private hospital was telling his family members.
A student of C.E.O.A. Matriculation Higher Secondary School here, Parthasarathy scored centum in mathematics, 199 marks in both chemistry and computer science and 195 marks in physics.
His father was rushed to a hospital in the morning and he died around noon.
“It is a very sad thing that happened on a happy occasion.
He was a systematic student and we did expect good marks from him,” said the school Principal Mary Ransom Jose.
The topper, who wants to study EEE, could not attend the felicitation function arranged by District Collector C. Kamaraj to congratulate the toppers in the district.
His father Sathiamurthy (58) was working as senior assistant at the State transport corporation depot in Karaikudi.
It was a very touching scene at the hospital as the Madurai district topper struck with grief could not believe that his father was dead.
While the other toppers of Government and Corporation schools in the district were celebrating the Plus Two results, the first ranker of Madurai district was in sorrow and being consoled by classmates and relatives.
Hospital authorities said that the boy's father suffered first heart attack and when he was brought to hospital, his pulse rate was drastically down. His body was taken to native Kavanur village, near Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district.
The Collector told the gathering at the Plus Two toppers' felicitation function that he was shocked on hearing the news. “On behalf of the district administration, I express condolences. I also congratulate the student for his good marks,” said Collector Kamaraj.
