District Judge makes surprise visit to Melur court

April 01, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - Madurai:

Principal District and Sessions Judge A.M. Basheer Ahamed and Chief Judicial Magistrate P. Saravanan made a surprise visit to Judicial Magistrate K.V. Mahendra Boopathy’s court at Melur near here on Thursday.

The visit comes close on the heels of Justice P.N. Prakash of the Madras High Court Bench here proposing contempt proceedings against the judicial officer on March 24 after “smelling rat” in the way he handled cases related to the multi-crore granite scam.

Mr. Boopathy retorted back on Tuesday by accusing the prosecution of having brought disrepute to him by suppressing crucial information before the High Court. He also ordered criminal prosecution against former Collector Anshul Mishra and two Special Public Prosecutors.

Against this background, the visit of the two senior judicial officers to Melur, coupled with a meeting of the Principal District Judge with Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao and Superintendent of Police Vijayendra S. Bidari in the district court complex in the evening, led to much speculation.

However, highly placed sources in the High Court denied having issued any direction to the Principal District Judge or Chief Judicial Magistrate to make the surprise visit.

Officials in the District Court too said that they had not received any communication in that regard from the High Court.
