“Discharge duties with commitment”

Teaching was a noble profession and teachers must discharge their duties with a sense of commitment, said Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan.

Addressing a Teachers' Day programme at Sara Tucker Girls' Higher Secondary School here on Sunday, he said that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government led by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was giving top priority to impart quality education. Teachers should teach social values to their students.

To provide education on an equal footing for all, the State government had initiated ‘samacheer kalvi' (equitable education). Since the future is in the hands of the youth, teachers, the mentors, had to guide on the right path.

Preparation of syllabus for text books for Standards two, three, four and five were getting ready since equitable education system would also be introduced for these classes. Subsequently, it would be introduced for Standards seven to ten, the Minister said.

Best teachers were given awards. Best result producing schools were given shields.

Students also displayed their talents in a cultural programme. Collector M. Jayaraman presided. Appaavu, MLA, Malairaja, MLA; Thangavelu, MP; Jessie Roche, Chief Education Officer; Kolappapillai, District Education Officer, Tirunelveli; Sakthi Mohan, District Education Officer, Tenkasi; and Parimala, District Education Officer, Cheranmahadevi, took part.
