A group of differently abled persons – all visually challenged - resorted to a road blockade near the Collectorate on Monday demanding speedy allotment of houses to them.

According to them, though the Minister concerned and the Collector had instructed officials in the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board to issue houses in either Rajakoor or in other places where multi-storied flats had been built, they had been delaying, S. Kuppian, president of Kasi Visually Challenged Welfare Association, Vilacheri, said and added that they had submitted petitions two years ago seeking houses.

In a bid to draw the attention of the government and the officials, the agitators came to the road around noon thus taking the police by surprise.

After they refused to withdraw the road blockade, the police used force and removed them from the spot. All the detained persons were let off, police said and added that traffic was held up for some time in the area.
