District Collector U. Sagayam presented tricycles worth Rs. 6 lakh to over 100 differently abled persons at the Anbagam School, DRO Colony, here on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the State government was keen on providing welfare assistance to the needy. The differently abled persons were special to the district administration, as in the entire State, Madurai stood first in handing over this facility to the beneficiaries today, he said with pride.
Tri-cycles worth Rs 3,900 each was presented to 90 persons, while another 15 persons received special vehicles designed at a cost of Rs 4200. About 20 persons with neuro disorders got sophisticated tri-cycles at Rs 5250 each. Further, about 50 people suffering from mental disabilities also received special training kits worth Rs 73000.
The government was reaching out to such segments in the society so as to bring them to the mainstream as early as possible.
The Collector pointed out that it was only in Madurai district, that persons with various disabilities were encouraged to come up in life. He also added that the Rehabilitation Department was organising special coaching classes for these people to appear for competitive examinations.
The Collector said that by encouraging the differently abled persons, the society can benefit in a big way.
Mr. Sagayam urged the public to do away with the stigma associated with persons with disabilities.
