Devotees thronged the streets of Tirupparankundram to witness the temple car procession held as part of Panguni Uthiram festival of the Subramaniaswamy Temple on Tuesday morning.

The presiding deities of the temple, Lord Subramaniaswamy and Goddess Deivayanai, were taken in a procession on an elaborately decorated temple car in the streets around the temple. Special ‘Abhishekams’ and pujas were performed to the deities early in the morning.

The procession began at 6.20 a.m. from outside the temple premises and hundreds of devotees lined up to pull the temple car amidst prayers and chants. The idol of Lord Vinayakar was taken in a separate temple car ahead of the deities in the procession. The temple elephant and camels would also be part of the procession.

As part of the Panguni Uthiram festival, the Thirukalyanam of Lord Subramaniaswamy and Goddess Deivayanai was held on the temple premises on Monday.

Apart from ‘annadhanam,’ devotees and local associations had set up stalls for water and buttermilk which they distributed to the people who had come to witness the procession and to those pulling the temple car.

A large posse of policemen had been deployed in the area to manage the crowd and the temple authorities said they had made arrangements in association with the city corporation to provide drinking water and sanitation facilities for the devotees. Later in the evening, the deities were once again taken in a procession on the golden peacock mount.
