A large number of devotees thronged the Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt at Pasumalai here to seek blessings from Mata Amritanandamayi Devi on Saturday.

As part of the 19{+t}{+h}anniversary celebrations of the Brahmasthanam Temple, Mata Amritanandamayi visited the Mutt to participate in satsang, bhajans and spiritual programmes through the weekend, representatives from the mutt said.

Collector L. Subramanian and Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa accorded a welcome to ‘Amma,’ as she is known among her devotees, to the city and spoke of her achievements and efforts with regard to service-related activities. A souvenir to mark the 19th anniversary was released by them.

Long darshan

“The darshan usually goes on for hours until every devotee meets ‘Amma’ to seek her blessings. There has always been a good response to the spiritual programmes in Madurai and there is a good crowd from the city and surrounding districts,” said P. Ashwathy, a follower from Kerala.

Many foreigners also thronged the Mutt to listen to the discourse and seek her blessings. “Her teachings and message to embrace love and compassion have played a major role in my life,” said a follower from the United Kingdom.

In her discourse, Mata Amritanandamayi emphasised the lack of love and compassion as the reason for most of the problems. “We need not search very far to cure the virus of hatred which is affecting thousands of lives on a daily basis. Love and compassion not only provide us with strength and vitality, they also uplift everyone around us,” she said. Speaking about the fast-paced life, ‘Amma’ said that it was necessary to nip negative thoughts in the bud.
