Dengue deaths suspected

With the death of two infants following fever reported at Vendrayanpuram near here, the health department officials are carrying out fogging and larvicidal activity since Tuesday.

Though a private hospital in Madurai has claimed that the death of a three-month-old male baby on August 12 was due to dengue, the Deputy Director (Health), V. Umamaheswari, said that it could not be confirmed.

“The baby was tested positive for dengue through the card test. However, this is not dependable and not accepted by the Government,” she said.

Stating that she had inspected the village, Dr. Umamaheswari said that the death of the three-year-old reported on Tuesday was due to acute dehydration.

She added mosquito-breeding was visible in the village due to storage of water in open utensils. Abate solution was distributed to the villagers for larvicidal activity.

The villagers have been advised to keep the utensils closed.

Stating that piled up garbage was a health concern in the village, she said that the local body authorities were advised to remove them to maintain hygiene.

The Gram Sabha has passed a resolution on Wednesday that the local shops should not give plastic carry bags to its customers, she added.
