Deer strays in search of food, water

A spotted deer strayed into the residential areas of Palayamkottai possibly from Gangaikondan Deer Park apparently in search of food and water.

After the passersby saw a spotted deer on Saturday morning at Srinivasa Nagar, they chased it away and the animal entered the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital new complex, where the construction of the hospital’s super speciality block opposite the TVMCH Men’s Hostel was going on. The labourers involved in construction informed the forest personnel about the wild animal.

Though the forest personnel, who came to the spot after an hour, tried to catch the deer with nets, they did not succeed. The forest personnel said the spotted deer might have strayed into the residential area from Gangaikondan deer park housing a sizeable number of spotted deer. “Since intense dry condition is prevailing in and outside the deer park due to monsoon failure, water is being stored in the small tank inside the park. Since there is no grass inside the park, the animals come out in search of food and walk for about several kilometres everyday,” the forest personnel said.
