The last one year has not been ‘All work and no play’ for S. Atchaya, a student of St. Joseph’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School who stood second in the district in the Plus Two examinations. With a total of 1,184, with centums in Economics, Commerce, Accountancy and Business Maths, the top scorer attributes a part of her success to Bharathanatyam.

“While many students give up all their extra interests and hobbies to focus solely on academics, I continued attending Bharathanatyam classes with Leelavathi Raja, my teacher. I also began teaching dance at home during weekends and took one-hour classes for five students,” says Atchaya, who has been learning dance for the past eight years.

The dancer, who had her ‘arangetram’ in 11th standard, says taking classes during weekends acted as stress busters and kept her recharged. “It gave me a good break from studies and improved my concentration as well,” she says.

The daughter of an official in the Commercial Taxes Department, Atchaya wants to pursue Chartered Accountancy. It is very important that students don’t attempt the exams feeling burdened or stressed, she says.
