The Madras High Court bench here on Wednesday adjourned a contempt petition filed by the father of a youth, who died in a petrol bomb attack, against the home secretary of Tamil Nadu to October 8.
The petitioner, S. Ganesan, claimed that his son G. Irulaiya, a mason, had died in 2009 after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi cadre had hurled petrol bombs inside a State Transport Corporation bus at Thirupuvanam on May 20, 2009 following news of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam supremo V. Prabhakaran’s death.
He had moved the High Court bench in 2010 seeking compensation for his son’s death and the court had directed the Home Secretary to pay Rs.10 lakh compensation with eight percent interest within two months, the petitioner claimed.
The Home Secretary had filed an appeal before a division bench and the appeal was dismissed in July this year, he claimed. Despite the dismissal of the appeal, the State has not disbursed the compensation, he alleged in his petition.
Therefore, he filed the contempt petition seeking action against the Home Secretary for failing to comply with the orders of the court.
A division bench comprising Justices M. Jaichandren and M. Venugopal heard the preliminary arguments of the petitioner’s counsel and adjourned the case.
