A couple were killed and seven others injured in a road accident at Abhishekapatti near here early on Monday morning.
Police said Mani (30) of Vasanthapuram in Melapalayam and his friend Shanmugam of Vilagam near Tirunelveli Junction had gone to Courtallam in a sports utility vehicle along with their families on Sunday night.
When they were returning home in the early hours of Monday, the SUV collided head on with a coal-laden lorry proceeding from Thoothukudi to Kerala even as tourists were crossing the Power Grid at Abhishekapatti.
While Mani’s wife Anushiya (25) was killed on the spot, eight others travelling in the car sustained grievous injuries and were sent to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. However, Mani died in the evening while the condition of his brother Kumar (28) is said to be critical. The couple’s son Dharshan (4) was also injured.
Traffic Investigation Wing Inspector Barnabas picked up lorry driver Thanga Mariappan of Kadayanallur for interrogation.
