A special team of police arrested three persons at Arasapatti near Thirumangalam here on Thursday following complaints of fake currencies being circulated by a gang.
In a recent operation, the Tirunagar police busted a gang and secured the main accused Ukkirapandi (52) in this connection. The modus operandi of the gang was to supply genuine currency notes (which include US dollars) and gold biscuits and gain the confidence of the customers. Subsequently they were issued “currencies in bundles” which carried only blank papers. At the time of handing over the bundles, the gang would divert the attention of the buyers stating that the police were expected. Only after sometime did the persons realise that the bundles were nothing but blank papers.
Following a complaint from a villager near T. Kallupatti that a three-member gang lured him by promising double the value, the police sent a decoy. As the transaction was under way, the team secured the accused identified as P. Saktivel (27), P. Karuppiah (45) and R. Pandi (37) of Arasapatti village.
It was alleged that the gang had promised to give Rs. 40,000 for a sum of Rs. 20,000 to the complainant.
Cases under IPC Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) were registered against the trio. Further investigation is on.
