A counselling centre to settle family disputes was opened at the District Police Office (DPO) here on Monday. The centre, supported by the Madurai Institute of Social Sciences (MISS), will enlist the help of professional counsellors.
At least 25 per cent of the petitions received on grievance redressal days were related to disputes between married couples and other domestic problems, Superintendent of Police V.Balakrishnan said while inaugurating the centre.
Though the petitioners were counselled at the police stations, they often came to the DPO in the hope of getting their problems redressed by the SP. "Many times, the petitioners are hesitant to reveal the real problems to the police. So we thought of bringing in trained counsellors to discuss their problems threadbare," he said. A woman counsellor, trained by the MISS, would be available at the counselling centre three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday).
