Students and their parents should not prioritise financial aspects while choosing a career since earning potential had considerably improved across all sectors over the years, said Gautam Ghosh, Director, Thiagarajar School of Management, while inaugurating the day-long The Hindu EDGE Career Counselling for Plus Two completed students here on Friday.

Arguing that three factors — career and growth potential, potential of the individual, and financial potential — should be given consideration while deciding on a course of study, he said that the focus should be more on the first two factors.

Citing an example, Mr. Ghosh said that while earning potential could be higher now in Information Technology sector, it was doubtful whether the sector would provide an adequate career growth in future.

“It appears that IT sector has reached a plateau. There is a technological shift towards artificial intelligence, which might bring down the job opportunities,” he said.

Pointing out that salaries across all sectors, including government jobs, had gone up considerably in the past few decades, Mr. Ghosh said that a person could now earn reasonably high salary in any sector if he or she performed well.

He urged the students and parents to give utmost importance to the potential of the individual while choosing a career since it was difficult to alter the career after entering a profession.

“While interviewing candidates for MBA admissions, I have seen students who had done incredibly well in their school but scored poorly in their undergraduation. Almost all of them were engineers, who took up engineering due to parental pressure,” Mr. Ghosh said.

Hundreds of students and parents participated in the event, which included talks by experts from different career streams.

VIT University was the presenting sponsor of the event, which was powered by Kalasalingam University. BODHI was the associate sponsor for the event. Sethu Institute of Technology, Annai Fathima College of Arts and Science, K.L.N Institute of Technology and Sterlite Copper also sponsored the event.

A booklet on National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test was distributed to all the participants by CEOA schools in association with The Hindu .
