Onion and fruit markets operating near Simmakkal area in the city will soon be shifted to Mattuthavani to decongest traffic especially in Veli streets.
The Madurai Corporation has identified a place behind Mattuthavani Bus Stand, where special market facility will be provided for onion and fruit traders in about six months.
This announcement was made in the corporation council meeting held here on Wednesday, where councillor S.T.Jayabalan raised the issue of inconvenience caused to the public because of parking of load lorries near four Veli streets.
Replying to the member’s question on what steps have been taken by the authorities to prevent lorry movement in the city during peak hours, City Engineer A.Mathuram has said that the corporation has already worked out a plan to shift the onion market to Mattuthavani.
“Vakkil New Street and East Marret Street face congestion due to lorry movement. In six months, we will shift the markets so that lorries will not be a hindrance to traffic flow,” he said.
However, Mr.Jayabalan has appealed to corporation Mayor V.V.Rajan Chellappa to immediately take up the issue with traffic police for regulating lorry movement near Veli streets till the shifting was done.
“Earlier, there used to be particular timings for entry of lorries in to the city. But now the lorry booking offices are keeping their lorries in Simmakkal area making it difficult for movement of buses and other vehicles,” he pointed out.
MLA attends meeting:
Meanwhile, Madurai Central MLA R.Sundarrajan had attended the council meeting on Wednesday which was held for the first time after the Lok Sabha election results. The last meeting took place in February and monthly council meetings were not convened in view of model code of conduct.
Mr.Sundarrajan, who won on DMDK ticket, read out a list of developmental works needed for his constituency which he had also taken to the attention of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa when he met her seeking government support.
The MLA’s demands placed before corporation include providing public amenities in Aruldosspuram, Thathaneri, Government Rajaji Hospital, works near Koodal Alagar Temple, cleaning up Anuppanadi water channel and sprucing up areas surrounding Meenakshi Temple.
