Fighting against many odds, Corporation schools, which are always seen and constructed as the “Other,” has performed much better in the Plus Two examinations. There is a substantial increase in pass percentage of Madurai Corporation schools. The Plus Two results announced on Tuesday shows that out of 2,361students who appeared for the Plus Two examinations from 12 higher secondary Schools, 2,175 have come out successful.
In 2009-10, the percentage stood at 89.5, in 2010-11 it saw a marginal dip at 88.5 per cent, and in 2011-12 it was a great recovery to stand at 92.12 per cent. In terms of pass percentage, the top three places among Corporation schools have been secured by Velliveethiyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Setupati Pandithurai Corporation Higher Secondary School, Avvai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School with 98.40 per cent, 96.72 per cent and 96.53 per cent respectively.
The three schools have seen a phenomenal increase in terms of pass percentage when compared to last year. Velliveethiyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School in 2011 secured 90.8 per cent and this year it saw close to 8 per cent increase at 98.4 per cent. Likewise Setupati Pandithurai Higher Secondary School and Avvai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School have seen a phenomenal increase of 6.72 per cent and 9 per cent respectively.
Located in a working class neighbourhood, Setupati Pandithurai School's results has been hailed by the Corporation officials. Esther Emma, Headmistress, said they were confident of increasing the pass percentage in future. M. Sivakami of Avvai school also opined the same.
I. Selvalakshmi of Kasturba Gandhi Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School emerged topper among corporation schools, with 1,142 marks, she has secured 199 in Chemistry, 196 in Physics and 194 in Biology and is expecting to join medical college. Selvalakshmi came second in the district two years ago in the SSLC examinations.
Hailing from a poor family, Selvalakshmi initially went for tuitions but unable to pay fees she had to discontinue. However, she compensated by putting in extra efforts. Her father works in a grocery shop, and her mother a homemaker. L. Daisy Vimala, Headmistress, said they conducted special classes and proved fruitful.
The second and third places have been secured by A.M.Geetha and R.Lavanya of EVR Nagammai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School who scored 1,116 and 1,111 respectively. Both the students are from commerce stream. Geetha's father runs a shop selling toys and her mother is a homemaker and she wishes to become an auditor.
Lavanya also wants to become an auditor. Since her father's health is not good, her mother Kanaga, being the breadwinner of the family, works in a garment shop and Lavanya too contributes to the family's income by working in a garment shop during leave. K. Vellaithai, Headmistress, EVR Nagammai Corporation Higher Secondary School, was happy that her students secured top spots.
Mayor presents award
Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa presented cash awards to the toppers at his office on Tuesday. The topper received a cash award of Rs.10,000 and the girls who secured second and third places were given Rs.5,000 each. Corporation Education Officer and heads of the schools were also felicitated.
Mr. Chellappa said that the students were largely inspired by the AIADMK government's various welfare schemes such as distribution of free laptops.
