The Corporation of Madurai has planned to construct two commercial complex buildings in the city soon.

In a bid to augment its revenue, two vacant sites belonging to the Corporation, one in Anna bus stand and another behind the Goripalayam intersection had been identified. The officials have been instructed to prepare estimates and other modalities would be examined soon, said an official spokesman here on Saturday.

Mayor V. V. Rajan Chellappa, Commissioner Kiran Gurrala and other officials visited the spots and decided to construct the buildings and let them out on rent.

At a recent meeting, an Assistant Commissioner in-charge of revenue collections, quoting the Commissioner, said that priority for the Corporation would be to collect all taxes on time from the assesses and also ensure that special drives were conducted to recover arrears.

Keeping this in mind, special drives are being organised in wards/zones to collect property tax arrears, which had fetched over Rs one crore in less than a month. On a single day, from ward number 18 (Pethaniapuram) in the Corporation limits, close to Rs 15 lakh was collected.
