Following complaints of letting out gutter water in the Vaigai river and on the storm water drain outlets, the Corporation authorities swung into action and collected fines from erring building owners for not having under ground drainage (UGD) connections on their premises.
According to an official press release issued here on Wednesday, the officials collected Rs 50,000 as fines from building owners after conducting checks on the premises. Though the UGD works had been completed in all the wards in the city, it had come to notice that a few more buildings – residential and commercial categories – had not yet taken the connection. As a result, they had let out the drain in the storm water outlets and along the Vaigai river.
Commissioner S. Sebastine has appealed to the building owners to immediately apply, get the UGD connection and ensure that the drainage channel was used productively by the residents.
During the checks conducted on random in about 25 dwellings and two commercial establishments along Chintamani canal, Kiruthumal canal and along the bank of Vaigai river, the officials found that many residential, shops and commercial buildings among them had not yet installed the UGD. Stern action would be taken against them even if they failed to get it executed immediately, he warned.
Though such discrepancies were found in many other wards, a majority of buildings in Pudur Karpaga Nagar, Pandalkudi, Shenoy Nagar, Chokkikulam, Sellur, S.S. Colony, Mela Ponnagaram, Kamarajar Salai, Palanganatham, T.P.K. Main Road among others had huge number of violators. Notice had been issued to the erring building owners and fines would be collected by the authorities, Mr. Sebastine said.
