In yet another showcasing of the talents of artisans, the Co-Optex showroom at Vengalakadai Street in Madurai on Monday unveiled the ‘Thiruvalluvar Tirukkural’ silk sari.
The unique aspect of this sari is that it contains a depiction of the legendary poet Thiruvalluvar and all the 1330 Tamil couplets according to the 133 chapters.
This master piece, the fruit of four months of labour, is 6.25 metres long and has 350 grams of silk and 1,200 gm of ‘jarigai’ (zari). It costs around Rs. 70,000.
This unique product was made public in the presence of G. Rajani Rathinamala, Chief Educational Officer of Madurai.
According to P. Esakki, Regional Manager of Co-Optex, these pieces are not for sale and were made only for the National Award given for handlooms, he added.
Another sari – ‘Semmozhi’ silk sari – contains 247 alphabets of the Tamil language was also unveiled on the occasion by S. Rajeswari, Principal of Mangayarkarasi College of Arts and Science for Women in Madurai. This product was also only for display and costs around Rs. 40,000.
Mr. Esakki said that on the occasion of Deepavali , the Tamil Nadu Government has given out a concession of up to 30 per cent on various products.
