‘Convert TNSTC into govt. department’

Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) employees staged a demonstration in front of the head office here on Wednesday, pressing for their various demands.

Speakers at the demonstration demanded conversion of the financially-ailing corporation into a government department for enhanced budgetary allocation.

Stating that there was undue delay in the disbursal of PF loans sought by serving employees, the agitators said applications were pending since February 2012, and the TNSTC management cited deficit finance as the reason. Similarly, leave salary for the employees had not been released since January 2010.

Under such circumstances, the State Government should consider making the TNSTC a department. Though there was budgetary allocation to the Corporation, it was intended only to procure new buses and meeting the expenses incurred by way of RTO procedure, TNSTC Staff Federation state treasurer S.Sampath said.

More funds

When the Corporation was treated as a department, it would get more funds, with which the employees’ welfare and other things could be taken care of, he added. The other issues highlighted by the agitators included rectification of anomalies in junior-senior pay structure.

Sustained operation

The TNSTC operated its fleet with the sole objective of serving the commuters. Hence, the public sector undertaking, which is governed by the Companies Act, should be converted into a government department to ensure sustained operation in future, the speakers noted.
