Construction of 36 schools taken up, says Collector

The construction and maintenance wing of the Public Works Department (PWD) has taken up construction of 36 school buildings under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) scheme and a Yatra Nivas for the benefit of pilgrims visiting Rameswaram island.

Giving details of the performance of PWD department during the last five years and ongoing projects at a press tour on Thursday, Collector S. Natarajan said the department has taken up construction of school buildings under RMSA scheme at a cost of ₹ 57.71 crore, of which construction of 26 schools was nearing completion.

The school buildings were constructed with financial assistance from Ministry of Human Resources Development with the objective to universalise secondary education by enhancing access and improving quality of education, while ensuring equity.

The Collector said the department was also building a Yatra Nivas in Rameswaram at a cost of ₹ 29 crore for the benefit of pilgrims visiting the island.

The department has also taken up construction of seven Government office buildings at a total cost of ₹ 2.73 crore in the island, he said.

The department proposed to build three hostel buildings with modern facilities for students at the total cost of ₹ 2.64 crore and new office buildings and Tahsildar quarters at the newly created Kilakarai revenue block at a cost of ₹ 2.62 crore, he added.

During the last five years, the department had built government buildings and created infrastructure facilities at a cost of ₹ 210 crore, Mr. Natarajan said. He inspected the frozen semen bank, built by the department at a cost of ₹ 58 lakh and ₹ 2.86 crore multi-purpose cyclone relief centre being built at the coastal Thirupalaikudi.

The Collector, accompanied by Executive Engineer A. Dinakaran and Assistant Executive Engineer T. Kuruthivelmaran, inspected a school building at Palanivalasai and a community centre-cum-multi purpose relief centre at Iranianvalasai.

The department, in the last five years, had built 23 multi purpose evacuation centres with Tsunami warning system, hostels, classrooms, integrated government office building, veterinary dispensaries and court buildings at a cost of ₹ 51.91 crore, the Collector said.
