Conduct ‘jallikattu,’ say Palamedu residents

December 28, 2014 01:03 pm | Updated 01:03 pm IST - MADURAI:

A majority of the residents of Palamedu threatened to stage a demonstration on Saturday, demanding the governments to conduct the annual sport – ‘jallikattu.’

On information, the police deployed pickets in and around the ‘vadivasal’ and other locations in the hamlet.

According to the villagers, they urged the need for conducting the ‘jallikattu’ in the district. “Only because of its popularity, people from far and near and even those from foreign countries witnessed the ‘jallikattu’ held during Pongal…”

By putting an end to ‘jallikattu’ based on some “unfounded myths,” the people are deprived of their rights and hence threatened to organise the sport against the court directive.

When they assembled, the demonstrators were informed about the directive and warned of legal consequences.

After persuasion, they dispersed by shouting slogans.
