Concern over drop in prices of coconuts

Farmers expressed concern over drop in the prices of coconuts during the grievance day meeting on Thursday.

They urged the district administration to get remunerative price for the produce. A farmer said that coconut leaves were withering due to pest attack.

When farmers raised the issue of damage to banana crops, S.K. Subramani, Executive Engineer, WRO of PWD said that a survey on crop loss of banana was being conducted.

An official from the Animal Husbandry Department said the government had sanctioned 250 units of poultries, each at a cost of Rs. 1,23,500 with a subsidy of Rs. 66,750 (given in two instalments) and stated that farmers who have lands in village panchayats are eligible to avail the scheme. Farmers pleaded for extension of the scheme to town panchayats as the district has 55 town panchayats.

Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan presided. District Revenue Officer S. Elango, Joint Director of Agriculture Elango and Executive Engineer. PWD, (WRO) S.K. Subramani participated.
