Demanding the immediate commissioning of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project’s first reactor to bailout the power-starved Tamil Nadu, a doctor from Chennai observed fast on the Collectorate campus for a while on Monday.
As he had not obtained formal permission from the police, he was told to submit an application in this connection so that he could be allowed to observe fast at a designated spot.
According to D. Rajasekar of Chennai, he was visiting various districts in a bicycle to campaign in support of the early commissioning of the KKNPP to bailout the State from power outages haunting the people, especially the children and the sick.
If the residents and the industrial units of Tamil Nadu had to be given uninterrupted electricity, the State should accord highest priority for giving clearance to new power projects while expediting all projects under construction including KKNPP.
“When I went to the surroundings of KKNPP on Saturday, I was denied permission to conduct my campaign and hence came to Tuticorin where I’d planned to observe a fast to highlight my demand. The police are not ready to give permission for my hunger strike on Monday and instead they are asking me to postpone the agitation to Tuesday. If the police don’t give permission for the protest on Tuesday also, I’ll start my hunger strike at Rajaji Park as planned,” Dr. Rajasekar said.
