Ahead of the ‘Karthigai Deepam’ festival scheduled for November 27, the police have stepped up security on the famous Tirupparankundram hillock.
Police officers said that they have mounted surveillance on movement of people in the vicinity in the last one week. A combing operation has been planned on the hillock on Saturday in which Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and other experts would be deployed. The exercise was to ensure that “there is nothing objectionable found or planted anywhere on the hillock, and to instil confidence among devotees who would visit the temple to witness the Deepam.”
About a fortnight back, some miscreants had planted IED-like explosives near the dargah and the Kasi Viswanathar Temple on the hillock. On information, Special Investigation Team police and Madurai District Police visited the spot and removed a bucket with explosives to a safe place. Experts had been examining them.
Under such circumstances, the police were fully geared up, a police officer said. There were some vital clues in the investigation under way in the explosives case, he said.
