Students of American College, Lady Doak College and Sourashtra College here on Friday demanded free laptops.
Final-year under graduate students of American College sought early distribution of the freebie. In the case of Lady Doak College, both second year and final-year students staged a protest stating that there was confusion on who should first receive free laptops.
However, the American College here received an official communication on Friday from the Directorate of Collegiate Education in Chennai that the laptops for academic year 2012-13 which were supplied to the college should be distributed to second year students. It assured that steps were being taken to supply laptops to the third year students in the next 40 days.
“We got a letter stating that the 686 laptops which we had received in the first phase would have to be given to second year students. The collegiate education officials have asked the college principals to tell their students to maintain peace as the third year students who have been waiting for laptops would receive them soon,” Davamani Christober, Principal and Secretary, American College, told “The Hindu” on Friday.
The communication was displayed on the notice-boards. For second year students, the laptops would be distributed on the day fixed by the Government.
Meanwhile, the Lady Doak College has suspended classes for both aided and self-financed students on December 21 and 22 due to the protest. The college reopens on January 3. Third year students of Lady Doak College were angry since the college had taken back laptops given to them on December 17.
