Collector L.Subramanian has directed all private hospitals to report tuberculosis cases to the government health authorities since it is a notifiable disease.
He said the TB reporting system had to be strengthened in private hospitals and testing laboratories so that an accurate database could be maintained and right interventions planned through public health network. The Collector had convened a meeting of doctors from various hospitals and laboratory staff to discuss ‘Mandate for TB notification’ at the Madurai Medical College on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, N.Mohan, Dean, Government Rajaji Hospital, said more awareness of the Revised National Tuberculosis Programme (RNTBP) must be created among the medical fraternity. Stating that there were a lot of advancements in the field of TB detection, he said it had become easier to confirm whether a person had been infected with the disease or not.
The role of the Indian Medical Association and private medical practitioners was crucial in reporting the cases quickly, he said. “TB eradication needs a comprehensive strategy, but the reporting of cases by private doctors is not good,” Dr.Mohan said.
M.Samy, Deputy Director of Medical Services (TB), Madurai district, said around 1,400 TB cases were reported every year, but the actual figure would be higher if all private hospitals reported their patients’ details.
