Cloudy skies bring respite

July 12, 2014 12:28 pm | Updated 12:28 pm IST - MADURAI:

Cloudy skies over the city for the last two days have given residents of the temple city the much-needed respite from the heat. While there had only been a marginal drop in the temperatures from 39 degrees last week to 38 degrees this week, the strong breeze has kept the weather pleasant.

Areas surrounding the city have been receiving intermittent showers for the last two days. Uttamapalayam, Veerapandi and Gudaloor received up to 14 mm of rainfall. Periyar Dam received nearly 90 mm of rainfall on Thursday and Friday which led to an inflow of 1,352 cusecs on Friday. Thekkady also received steady rainfall and recorded 70 mm of rainfall during the last two days.

PWD officials said that while catchment areas near the Vaigai remained cloudy during the day on Friday, they expected intermittent showers on Friday night.

Southern districts which include Theni and Nagercoil also received intermittent showers on Friday.

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted an average rainfall of 17 mm during the next one week in Madurai District and a maximum temperature of 35 degrees, which might bring in better weather.
