Around 110 volunteers of ‘Hindu Aalaya Paathugappu Kuzhu’ cleaned the Chithirai streets around Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple on Sunday.
Students and people cutting across all age groups from different walks of life took part in the exercise. “I have been taking part in this service for the past 8 years,” said Kumar, a volunteer. Once during my visit to Meenakshi temple I saw people cleaning up the premises. Then I felt that I should do my bit and volunteered to join the team,” he added.
The volunteers removed cobwebs, oil stains and swept the mandapams in Meenakshi temple.
The committee has been organising such cleaning camps every month for the past 15 years. There are over 700 members in the organisation who work every Sunday.“We usually take up the cleaning of Teppakulam, 1000 pillars, elephant mahal and Adi streets. This time we chose to clean the Chithirai streets,” said its State general secretary Sundara Vadivel.
The organisation also cleans the Subramnaiaswamy Temple in Tirupparankundram and Koodal Azhagar Temple.
“Our aim is to help preserve and maintain the temples in the city. We support them by taking care of some of their basic requirements every month,” Mr. Sundara Vadivel added.
