Class 10 pass percentage goes up in Madurai

District improves its State ranking from 14th spot last year to 13th this year

Keeping with the trend seen in Plus Two results, the Class 10 results released on Wednesday also showed that the pass percentage in Madurai district witnessed notable improvement compared to 2014-15.

The Class 10 pass percentage increased almost by 1.5 percentage points from 94.21 last year to 95.68 per cent this year. Consequently, the district has also improved its State ranking from 14th spot last year to 13th this year.

Of the 463 schools in the district, 212 had secured centum pass. Almost all the schools, including government schools, Matriculation schools, schools run by Adi Dravida Welfare Department, Kallar Reclamation schools and Corporation schools have shown improvement in pass percentage.

Among the three educational districts in Madurai district, Usilampatti had performed slightly better, compared to Melur and Madurai, this year with a pass percentage of 96.46. As has been the trend, the pass percentage of boys (93.89) was lower than that of the girls (97.53).

The highest mark of 498 in Madurai district, which is also the second highest in Tamil Nadu, was shared by four students, of whom three were girls. Ten students had scored 497 marks while another 14 got 496 marks in the district.

The district first rank holders were C. Dharshini from Cathy Matriculation Higher Secondary School, K.P.V. Karpagajothi from St Joseph’s Girls HSS, P. Saran from TVS HSS and M. Sri Shanmathi from Velammal Matriculation HSS.

Attributing their success to their parents, and the additional coaching and motivation received from their schools, majority of them said that they would be opting for Biology-Mathematics group for Class 11 to keep their options open for engineering or medicine.

Darshini said that she would like to pursue engineering in Genetics owing to her interest in Biology. “However, I am also passionate about becoming an IAS officer,” she said. Sri Shanmathi said that she would like to become a doctor as both her parents were doctors in Melur government hospital.

Later in the evening, all the 34 students, who secured the top three ranks in the district, were felicitated by the Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao.
