The district earned a rare distinction on Friday as five of its Class X students bagged first, second as well as third rank in the State level in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations this year.
While the first and second ranks were secured by one girl each, the third rank was shared by three. The pass percentage of the district rose to 93.43, highest in the last 10 years, with 41,828 out of 44,767 students clearing the examinations.
Of the total number of students who took the examinations, 22,930 were boys and 21,837 were girls. Though the strength of girls who took the examinations was low compared to boys, the former’s pass percentage was much higher than the boys.
As per the data provided by Joint Director of School Education M. Palanisamy, 20,925 girls (95.82 per cent) and 20,903 boys (91.16 per cent) in the district passed the examinations in their first attempt. Those who failed included 2,027 boys and 912 girls.
Students from 438 schools in the district appeared for the SSLC examinations and 188 schools registered centum results. The distinction was shared by 15 government, one municipality, four Corporation, five Kallar, one Adi Dravidar Welfare, 20 government- aided and one special school among others.
J.B.M. Deepthi of Fusco’s Matriculation School at Anna Nagar and M. Dhuvaraha of CEOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School secured the first and second place respectively in the State as well as the district level, with 498 and 497 marks respectively, among those who had chosen Tamil as first language.
The third place was shared by B. Keerthana, K.R. Mythili and M. Vishnavi Durga of CSR Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tagore Vidyalayam Matriculation Higher Secondary School and CEOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School respectively. They had scored 496 marks.

Among those who had chosen French and Sanskrit as first language, G. Cibita, S. Priyadarshini and S. Shreenhithy of TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School scored district second rank with 497 marks. R. Kadambari of the same school and S. Shalini of Mahatma Matriculation Higher Secondary School shared the third place.
There was a huge leap in the number of centum scorers in individual subjects this year as a whopping number of 5,005 students scored centum in various subjects as against 968 last year.
The district data showed 1,443 students scored centum in mathematics this year compared to a small number of 46 last year. The number of centums in science also increased to 1,945 from 440 last year.
This year, 1,587 students scored centum in social science as against 481 last year. Though not a single student scored centum in Sanskrit last year, 28 of them achieved it this year. While the number of centums in English increased to two from one last year, none of the students scored centum in Tamil.
