The CITU has condemned the “closure” of many industries, including handloom units, cotton mills and papad units here, saying it had led to migration of workers to other places.
It demanded that the Centre promote medium and small scale and tiny industries and expedite the process of setting up IT units and also criticised the government for “not taking any steps” to increase food production.
These were among the resolutions taken at the sixth urban district conference of the CITU here on Sunday, a CITU press release said.
Another resolution also urged Centre to desist from selling shares of Public Sector Units.
Earlier State CITU president, A.K. Padmanabhan, demanded that the Tamil Nadu government expedite the process of amending the Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act 1946.
He alleged that the Industrial Employment (Standing orders) Act 1946 pertained to regulating the practice of Industrial units exploiting apprentices for a long period.
Apprentices are engaged in direct production and are poorly paid with no statutory benefits. After the stipulated period of apprenticeship, they are removed from service and fresh recruits are appointed, CITU alleged.
