Christmas celebrated with gaiety in Madurai

Special programmes conducted in many churches to mark the occasion

Effervescent mood marked Christmas celebrations across Madurai from the late hours of Monday as special mass and services were conducted in various churches.

Shops, bakeries, educational institutions and several commercial outlets in the city hwere decked up with Christmas trees and crib.

Special events were organised in most of the churches where parish members exhibited their talents through cultural performances, exchanged gifts and celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ with gaiety and fervour. Dressed in new outfits, thousands attended midnight masses and special prayers held in various churches in the city.

Special prayers were organised in churches including Lourdu Church at K. Pudur, Rosary Church on Town Hall Road, St. Joseph’s Church at Gnanaolivupuram, Sacred Heart Church at Railway Colony and several others. Several churches in the city had as many as three services on Tuesday while a few had one service that started at 3 a.m.
