The second round of Pulse Polio immunisation for children was conducted across the district on Sunday.
Polio drops were administered to children of 0-5 years of age through 1,600 immunisation booths in urban and rural areas and the target was to cover 3,06,030 children. Special teams, formed for the purpose, monitored the immunisation exercise.
K. Kulandaisamy, Additional Director of Public Health, along with S.Senthilkumar, Deputy Director of Health Services, Madurai district, supervised the arrangements made for administering the vaccine. The district administration also had deputed special teams to ensure that children did not miss receiving the oral polio drops.
Children of migrant workers, nomadic groups, refugee camps and children in transit were given special attention. Through mobile booths, the polio vaccine was given to 3,000 children who were travelling with their parents.
Health officials said booths were set up at public places, including railway station, bus stands and airport. The Madurai Corporation which had made elaborate arrangements for the polio drive had 232 immunisation booths to cover 1,08,300 children.
House to house verification will be carried out for the next two days and those who missed the vaccine will be covered by health workers.
