Residents of Poigaikaraipatti have demanded excavation of four dysfunctional wells on the premises of a chemical factory, in their presence, to verify their claim that chemical waste was dumped there.

Scores of villagers from Poigaikaraipatti, Naikkanpatti, Moonur, Valayapatti and Kallandiri staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate on Thursday.

The protest was organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist).

Its State secretary Balasundaram said that the Collector should order the closure of the factory as the residents had been complaining of ground water contamination.

Communist Party of India’s rural district secretary P. Kalidoss said that crops were withering due to water contamination. He criticised the officials of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board for “ignoring” the complaints.

CPI (ML) district secretary Mathivanan demanded that the villagers should be provided with alternative source of water.
