The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday directed an advocate commission constituted by the court to inspect works carried out by the temple administration at the Koodal Azhagar Perumal Temple tank and submit a report.

A Division Bench issued the directive to the two-member panel while hearing a suo motu public interest litigation initiated by the High Court Bench’s registry in 2011 to revive the tank.

After an inspection in December 2013, the advocates had submitted a report recommending action to be taken to revive the temple tank. They had recommended that the commercial establishments around the tank must be shifted to an alternative location. The compound walls of the tank should be heightened and the drainage outlets blocked. They had observed that the more than 100 commercial establishments around the tank marred the scenic beauty of the tank.

Acting on the court directive, the temple administration undertook measures to desilt the tank and cleared the tank bed. On Monday, when the case came up for hearing, the judges directed the advocate commissioners to visit the temple tank on January 31, ascertain if leakage of drainage into the tank was stopped completely and inspect other works. The judges directed the commission to submit its report on February 11.
