Utter confusion prevailed at the e-service centres at North and South Taluk offices in Madurai Collectorate where hundreds of people, mostly women, gathered to get plastic Aadhaar cards on Thursday so that they could to link it to their ration cards.

At least 200 persons were standing at the e-service centre at North Taluk as the one at South Taluk office was not working. “The staff there (at South Taluk office) were yelling at us and not giving any proper reply as to when it would start functioning,” a woman complained. She had been coming here for the past three days, she claimed.

The trouble started after the salesman in ration shops insisted that the Aadhaar card of each member of the family should be produced for linking it with the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation database. However, many complained that the copy of Aadhaar cards printed at private internet centres were not accepted at the ration shops.

“We applied for Aadhaar cards one year back. But, we are yet to receive them. Now, those printed at private internet centres are not valid. At the e-service centres, they come up with all types of complaints from printing machine not working to no internet connection,” another man said.

Sulthan Beevi of Puliyankulam needs the card for her 10{+t}{+h}standard daughter. “I have come here four times. But it has not been resolved,” she said.

M. Muniyappan of Jaihindpuram complained that there was some error in his Aadhaar enrolment. “I am told that it could be set right only in New Delhi. And here they refuse to get fresh enrolment. I am at a loss as to how to proceed with getting Aadhaar card,” he said.

With the salesman at ration shop threatening to “cancel” their family cards if the Aadhaar card is not produced by month end, the people are getting agitated on hearing the various excuses at the e-services centres.
