The Department of Forest has formed 40 groups — 55 persons in all — to conduct elephant census in the reserved forest areas of Kanyakumari district. The exercise started on Saturday.
According to sources, elephants in Kanyakumari district used to migrate to the reserved forest areas of Kerala during summer season and would return to their habitats once the climate changes to their liking.
During last year's census, it was revealed that there were more than 55 elephants in the reserved forest areas of the district. It was taken on the basis of the footprints.
A report would be submitted to the Government once this year's census is over.
