A closed circuit television (CCTV) camera installed by the city police has captured the murder of a milk stall owner, B. Suresh Kumar (35), on Nethaji Road here on Wednesday night.

“With the video footage, we are trying to identify the culprits involved in the murder,” Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur said here on Thursday.

A five-member gang assaulted Suresh Kumar in his milk stall at around 10.40 p.m., inflicting multiple injuries and leaving him in a pool of blood. He died at the Government Rajaji Hospital.

“The video footage showed one of the gang members walking towards the shop and stationing himself there. Later, the others arrived on the scene and started attacking him with lethal weapons as Suresh Kumar began to run and eventually fell down on the road,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Thilagarthidal) A. Ganesan said.

A few people in neighbouring shops were seen watching the incident. "They should have been shocked by the sudden attack. The assailants had not shown any hurry in escaping from the scene, but casually walked into a nearby lane," he added.

The motive behind the murder was not immediately known.

The police suspect that the assailants murdered Suresh Kumar mistaking him for his younger brother, who had picked up a quarrel with his neighbours.
