While the plains in the district witnessed intermittent drizzle since Tuesday evening, the Western Ghats experienced significant rainfall on Wednesday also, thanks to the low pressure persisting off the coast of Sri Lanka.

After a prolonged dry-spell, the catchment areas of Papanasam and Manimuthar Dams received 168 mm and 118.80 mm respectively following rains in the Western Ghats. Consequently, water level in these two major reservoirs increased marginally.

All waterfalls at Courtallam received copious inflow following rains in the Western Ghats. Visitors were not allowed to take bath at Main Falls, which was in full flow since morning.

On Wednesday, areas around Alangulam experienced rain for about 20 minutes around noon and it drenched the paddy ready for harvest in a few areas. However, vegetable growers of Alangulam, Surandai and Paavoorchathram areas, the ‘Vegetable Basket’ of the district, were jubilant seeing the rains.

“This is really good for my crop,” said S. Thangamani Nadar of Karumpuliyooththu near Alangulam, who has cultivated bottle gourd and snake gourd on nearly 3 hectares. Rainfall in the district (in mm): Papanasam Dam – 168, Manimuthar Dam – 118.80, Servalar Dam – 70, Kannadian Channel – 53, Ambasamudram – 35.20, Cheranmahadevi – 25, Gadananadhi Dam – 24.60, Nanguneri and Gundar Dam – 24, Vadakku Pachchaiyar Dam – 21.60, Kalakkad – 21, Palayamkottai – 20, Karuppanadhi Dam – 19, Shencottai – 15, Radhapuram – 14, Tenkasi – 12, Tirunelveli – 11.40, Sankarankovil – 11, Sivagiri and Alangulam – 10, Aayikudi – 5.20 and Veerakeralamputhur – 4.
