Very soon, the city residents can have car-free Sundays. The Madurai Corporation is examining the modalities and plans to announce a car-free stretch of road.
Speaking to The Hindu , Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri said many works were carried out in the city in the past three to four months, especially with an eye on Smart City programme. Bid to give a facelift to the city had been getting good support from the public.
Mr. Nanduri said toilets within one km radius of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple were being spruced up. As a pilot project, an e-toilet would be set up near the park opposite the temple. The main feature of the e-toilet was that it would automatically clean itself once it was used with a short flush and long flush. “We have ordered 12 such e-toilets and soon they will be installed in 12 places. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited is our partner in this initiative. It will implement the project under its corporate social responsibility activity,” he added.
On car-free Sundays, he said the officials had examined the modalities and would soon unveil the stretch. By not using vehicles on a select stretch for a specific time, the public can use it for morning stroll. According to an official, Race Course Road would be ideal for the project.
